“Live resin” shows up on more and more vape labels, usually at a higher price point than standard carts. Here’s what the term actually means, so you know what you’re paying for.
What live resin is
Most extracts are made from cannabis that has been dried and cured first. Live resin is made from fresh plants that are flash-frozen at harvest, skipping the dry-and-cure entirely. The point is terpenes – the aromatic compounds that give each variety its smell and taste. A lot of them evaporate during curing, and freezing the plant right away keeps far more of them in the final product.
How it’s made
Licensed producers freeze the fresh flower, run it through closed-loop extraction to pull out cannabinoids and terpenes together, then carefully purge the solvent. The finished concentrate goes into cartridges, pods or disposables. In Canada’s legal market, every batch is tested before it reaches a store shelf.
How it differs from other carts
Compared with distillate carts – which strip the plant down to nearly pure cannabinoids and sometimes add terpenes back afterwards – live resin keeps the plant’s own terpene profile more or less intact. In practice that means a fuller, more distinct flavour and aroma that actually varies from strain to strain. Cured resin sits in between: real plant terpenes, but from dried flower rather than fresh-frozen.
Worth knowing before you buy
- Live resin products tend to be potent. If you’re new to them, take smaller draws than you would from a familiar cart and give it time.
- Flavour fades with heat and age. Store carts upright, out of the sun and away from the car dashboard.
- Formats range from 510-thread cartridges to pods and all-in-one disposables – the extract is the same idea in each, so pick the hardware that suits you.
We usually have a few live resin options on the shelf. Ask us at the Keswick shop what’s in stock and we’ll help you compare.
