Cannabis retail is one of the newer job markets in Ontario, and it comes up at the counter a lot: what’s it like to work in a store like this, and what does it take? Here’s the honest picture.
What the job actually is
A budtender’s day is mostly conversations: helping a first-timer find a low-dose starting point, helping a regular chase a terpene profile they liked, keeping the menu knowledge current as products rotate weekly. Around that sit the retail fundamentals – receiving, inventory counts, merchandising, ID checks on every face that looks remotely under 25, and a till.
What you need in Ontario
- Be 19 or older – the legal age applies to staff as well as customers.
- CannSell certification – the mandatory AGCO-approved training for anyone selling cannabis in Ontario. It’s a short online course covering the law, ID checks and responsible sale.
- Retail instincts – patience, honesty, and comfort saying “I don’t know, let me check” beat encyclopedic strain knowledge on day one.
Where it can go
Stores need shift leads, inventory managers and general managers; the wider industry needs growers, processors, quality-assurance people, delivery logistics and marketing folks who understand the rules. Retail is a common first rung because you learn the products and the customers at the same time.
A few realities
It’s retail: evenings, weekends and holidays are part of the deal, and the compliance side is strict – ID checks and record-keeping aren’t optional, ever. If that structure suits you, it’s genuinely good work with people who like talking about what they sell.
We post openings on this site and in the window of our Keswick shop. Come introduce yourself – a good conversation at the counter is half an interview anyway.
